William Orbit

Ambient-house pioneer and master remixer William Orbit (real name William Wainwright) began his musical career in the early-'80s band Torch Song. When the group broke up, he remained in the studio to learn the ropes and began to provide remixes for artists, including Madonna, Prince, the Human League, Erasure and Belinda Carlisle. Orbit concurrently recorded his own material under the name Strange Cargo and released three albums during the late '80s and early '90s. He occasionally records as Bass-O-Matic and founded Guerilla and O Records. During 1997, he worked with Madonna as the main producer for her electronica-oriented LP Ray of Light. It won Grammy awards for Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording. Ray of Light's success led to a host of remixing and production work, including Blur's 1999 album 13.

Single: Barber's Adagio for Strings

[WEA247T]
Barber's Adagio for Strings

Track Listing:

  1. Barber's Adagio for Strings - Original Version
  2. Barber's Adagio for Strings - Ferry Corsten Remix

Released 12/99 on Warner Music UK. Written by Samuel Barber and arranged, produced and performed by William Orbit. Additional production on track 2 by Ferry Corsten. The original William Orbit version of Barber's Adagio for Strings was the tear jerker used in the film Platoon. Needless to say the Ferry Corsten remix is a strange combination of moods for a dance track. It's an anthemic pounding trancer with big build-ups and that deep melancholy tune in the mid-track breakdown. But it works well, as Ferry Corsten has produced yet another trance monster that's being played every five minutes on the radio and by most DJ's. OK, so it's already been played to death and i'm already a little tired of it, BUT i'd be more than happy if it can it remove Cliff Richard and that Millenium Prayer from the number one spot - or do we have to surgically remove him and his choir of bratts?

12": Ravel's Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte

Ravel's Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte

Track Listing:

  1. Single Version (7.09)
  2. Ferry Corsten Remix (6.41)

Released 4/00 on Warner Music UK. Written by Maurice Ravel and arranged, produced and performed by William Orbit. Additional production on track 2 by Ferry Corsten. This is the second single from the 'Pieces in a Modern Style' album, and a hard act to follow given the success of Adagio for Strings a few months back. However, Ferry Corsten has yet again provided an excellent, if not slightly predictable remix, making this a worthy purchase.
