Trance and Progressive House - Artists I - M
Listed on this page are various trance / progressive house singles and 12"s listed in alphabetical order (indexed by the first letter of the artists name). When I first started writing this site I grouped singles and 12"s together in this fashion as a fast means of cataloging tracks. These pages are now being slowly dissolved, with each individual artist and producer featuring on their own individual page, although this is taking some time to complete. In the mean time use the A - Z link bar below to skip to other pages on these A-Z pages. Please note that a full A-Z list of artists and producers featuring on this site can be found here.

12": Illuminatus - Hope[AVANT001 / AVANT002]
Released 5/99 on Avantgarde Records. Written and produced by Armin Johert and Dennis Sarratou. As featured on Global Undergrounds Sasha in San Francisco compilation. Salt Tank deliver an almighty remix that contains more drive than an episode of Top Gear. The format is amazingly simple, yet highly effective and powerful. This is progressive house at its best. Oliver Lieb doesn't quite maintain the momentum, although his remix is unusually upbeat and light-hearted in contrast to most of his recent material. The Z2 Remix sticks to the Salt Tank format, although mid track this breaks away from the driving trancey sound and becomes more diverse. Not to be missed.

CD Single / 12": Jens - Loops & Tings '98[BIEM/STEMRA 2003875 / CNR Music 2003877]
Released '98 on Arcade Music and also on CNR Music (EQuality). Written, composed and produced by Jens Mahlstedt and Gerret Frerichs. Licensed from Superstition Recordings GMBH. Note that the track listing on both the vinyl and the CD incorrectly credits track 1 and 2 by "Benno De Goey". First released in Germany in '97 on Superstition Recordings GMBH. The club classic 'Loops and Tings' gets a '98 make over with a couple of superb new remixes.

12": Jez & Choopie - Yim[CDMULTY31 / 12MULTY31P]
Released '98 on Multiply Records. Written and produced by J. Ansell, S. Freundlich and D. Geyra. Israels's premier house DJ Choopie was the pioneer of electronic music in Israel's techno scene before meeting up with Jez when they set up Agnosia Records. 'Yim' is released through Multiply, featuring vocals from Imin Aloo, the song made famous by Ofra Haza and her subsequent sampling by Eric B and Rakim's remix of 'Paid in Full'. This has got to be my favourite release of '98. Aim for the Qattara Remix, which is a full on storming trance epic with the most amazingly euphoric mid track vocals/chants. All of the other mixes hit the mark too - don't miss!

12": Jonathan Peters Presents Luminaire - Flower Duet[PELIT001 / PELID001]
Released 7/99 on Pelican Records. Written and produced by Jonathan Peters, featuring samples from the 'Flower Duet' Choeurs et Orchestre du Theatre National de L'Opera Comique. On the 12" head straight for the Solarplexus Mix which is a storming acid edged trancer with glorious breakdowns featuring a sample from the classical piece of music the 'Flower Duet'. This is a rare example of where classical and dance music combine well. Way Out West produce a more adventurous mix, chopping up the beats and the classical sample. The CD single features an addtional radio edit and an awesome original mix by Mr Peters himself - why this is not on the vinyl I really don't know because this is the best of the lot.

12": Jon The Dentist - Global Phases[PHX2003]
Released on 8/00 on Phoenix Uprising. Written, mixed and produced by Jon the Dentist. Additional remix and production on track 2 by Mark Lawrence. This is a reissue of a one of Jon the Dentists finest tracks. The 2K Hard House Phases is a full on hard houser, whilst the Mark Lawrence Rephase is more trancey, and the better cut of the two in my opinion.

12": Jon The Dentist vs Ollie Jaye - Imagination[TIDY126T1 / TIDY126T2]
Released on 7/99 on Tidy Trax. Produced and engineered by Jon the Dentist. Head straight for the K90 Remix which is going to be one of my all time favourite tracks of the year. This is a well-produced acid-trance remix that builds and eventually lets fly in true style. This one ranks along side C.M's 'Dream Universe'. Shame about the other remixes, which are dreadful in comparison; the Barabas & OD1 Epic Trance Score, for example, is anything but "epic-trance"....ho hum.
CDS: Jon the Dentist vs Ollie Jaye - Imagination[TIDY126CD]
Released 1999 on Tidy Trax. Written and produced by Jon the Dentist. Thanks to Brian Harris for this information.

12": K90 - Above the Clouds[AQUA15]
A scorching crossover of trance/hard house on the Aquarius Record label (8/98). The original mix stands out a mile over Ylems amicable remix; a full-on-banging-must-have for the collection.
| |||
12": Katcha - Touched by God[HOOJ077 / HOOJ077R]
Released 8/99 on Hooj Choons. Written & produced by Katcha. The Katcha's '4am With Pecker Mix' and the Alfie Conn Mix are both equally good smooth trancers (although the synth vocals are somewhat oldish sounding), where the former features a rather familiar "na na nah" sample from Transglobal Underground's 'Templehead' - strange how this is credited. In contrast, the Peace Division Remix (J. Drake and C. Henry) and The Light Remix (John Ross & Joe Williams with additional help from Claudio Giussani aka Terra Ferma) are drum and bass remixes.

CD Single/12": Pete Lazonby - Sacred Cycles[HOOJ093CD]
Released 5/00 on Hooj Choons as 2x12" and 1xcd. Written and produced by Pete Lazonby. Remix and additional production on track 1 by John Graham, on track 3 Jesse Skeens and on track 4 by Cass & Pete Martin. This is an old trance classic from about 5 years ago, the original mix of which still sounds good today. Quivver sticks to the original formula, tweaking it in all the right places, whilst the Medway and the Cass/Slide mixes are more diverse, suiting an experimental/progressive audience. Anther excellent trancey mix of this track featured on the Yum Yum remix album back in 1997, the sampler of which is listed here.

12": Legend B - Lost in Love '99[12RSN2001]
Released 8/99 on Rising High Records. Written by Pete Blaze and Jens Aherns. The classic anthem from '95 (originally released on Ascension Records and then on Perfecto) has another makeover, this time round from Starecase, Taucher and Floorplay. Not sure why the Taucher mix has been reduced to the radio edit (his full length mix features on the double album 'DJ Taucher - Life is a Remix'), since this is a quality remix. Likewise Floorplay deliver a storming slice of trance whilst it's the Starecase Mix that gets the best mix award for being to daring enough to break the fast paced trance template set by so many remixes in the past and hence breathing some new life into this track. This mix features a much slower BPM, kicking off with a gentle breakbeat driving behind soothing melodies and the softly spoken samples of "I remember" and "lost in love". Even when the main beat kicks in the pace is far more relaxed than any previous mix I've heard of this track - a supeb remix.

12": Oliver Lieb - Subraumstimulation[DATA7]
Released 2/2000 on DATA Records (Ministry of Sound). Written and produced by Oliver Lieb. A strong release from Germany's Oliver Lieb, on the same UK label that first brought us the Kamaya Painters. Skip the main mix and head straight for the John Johnson Remix, which is a wicked minimalistic, percussion fuelled, techno tinged trancer. If you liked the Trommelmaschine version of Der Dritte Raum's 'Hale Bop' then you'll most certainly like this one.

CDS: Oliver Lieb - Subraumstimulation[8 96153 2]
Released 1999 on Orbit.
| |||
12": Oliver Lieb - Subraumstimulation (Remixes)[DATA7R]
Released 3/2000 on Data. Written and produced by Oliver Lieb. Additional production on track 1 by Sander Kleinenberg and on track 2 by M.I.K.E. Two additional new remixes that both follow in line with Oliver Liebs original mix, with the Sander Kleinenberg Remix sounding the most polished of the two.

12": Limited Growth - No Fate[BTP3897]
Released '98 on Bonzai Trance. Written by Steve Be-Zet, A. C. Bousten and Zyon. Anyone who knows anything about trance will know the original mix of "No Fate" on Eye Q records - here it gets a superb make over courtesy of Quadran.
| |||
12": Liquid Art - Magnetic North[HK033]
Released on Hook Recordings (8/98). First release by Liquid Art on Hook was the mighty fine Liquid Art EP a few years back. Deep grooves and heavy percussion lend to this demon trance track - a definite must.
| |||
12": Liquid Breeze - Children of Africa[WASH0156]
Released 6/99 on Wash Records. Written and produced by Oliver Wagner and Christian Weber, except track 3 written and produced by Oliver Wagner, Christian Weber, Elmar von Cramon & Holger Fertig. Another strong trancer from Wash Records (see also Plastic Angel - Schatten '99). The best here is the Club Mix of Children of Africa, which isn't as tribal as the title suggests and is about as far from native African music as you could possibly get. But it is a superb trancer and does feature a female spoken vocal of "the children of Africa".

Cd Single/12": Mea Culpa - Spiritual Light[124D006/124D006CD]
Re-released 3/2000 on FourD Recordings. Written and produced by D. Jarmen. Additional production on track 1 (CD Single) by John '00' Fleming and Chris Daniels. A classic trancer that has gained massive support since its original release back in '98 from Gatecrasher resident Judge Jules, and hence this re-issue. The John '00' Fleming Mix is still the best pick of the bunch.
| |||
12": Mea Culpa - Time and Motion EP[12D005]
Released 11/99 on FourD Recordings. Written by D. Jarman. This is the follow up to the Gatecrasher anthem 'Spiritual Light'. I'm not overly keen on 'Tahiti', but the other two tracks on this 12" are superb uplifting trancers.

CD Single: Mike Oldfield - Let There be Light[YZ88OCD]
Released '95 on Warner Music. Written by Mike Oldfield. Track 1 taken from the album 'Songs of a Distant earth'. Tracks 2, 3 & 6 additional production by Brian Transeau. Track 4 & 5 additional production by Hardfloor. The Pure Luminescence Remix by BT is probably the best dance track to date by Mike Oldfield, who is usually associated with tubular bells. But in this long, scorching remix there isn't a bell in sight - just build-up after build-up and wave after wave of mid paced trance. Widely overlooked by most DJ's and the music press - not to be missed if you can still find it! Note that the European release only features tracks 1-4, whist the above track listing is the US release.
| |||
CD Single: Mike Oldfield - Far Above the Clouds[WEA206CD1 / WEA206CD2]
Released 5/99 on Warner Music UK. Written & produced by Mike Oldfield. Original version taken from the forthcoming album 'Tubular Bells 3'. You're going to either love this one, or totally loathe it! The best of the remixes come from the tripomatic flamenco duo Jam & Spoon, who combine an excellent percussion based trancey intro (of about 5 minutes) with the main tubular bells style track, separated by softly spoken lyrics by some child waffling on about being 'far above the clouds'. The Deep Inside the Club Mix is currently getting a lot of air-play at Whirl-Y-Gig, where it fits in with Balearic style of music. I'm not sure it will work in mainstream clubland though.

CDS: Mike Oldfield - Far Above the Clouds [CD1][WEA206CD1]
Released 1999 on Warner Music. Thanks to Brian Harris for this information.

12": Mike Oldfield - Woman of Ireland (The Remixes)[WEA093T]
Released '97 on Warner Music. Written by Mike Oldfield. A rather weak affair, even from System 7.
