Sounds of the Funked Up Generation
Originally this mix CD was intended to be the third in the 'In This World' series of CDs that i've produced. But as the selection of tunes came together it became apparent that there was a slight departure from the global vibe that distinguishes the ITW series and hence I thought it better to start a new series altogether. And so 'Sounds of the Funked Up Generation' was born. E-mail me to obtain any of my mix CDs - please note that they have been recorded as DJ demo CDs and hence I am not attempting to make money from what is essentially copyrighted material.

Recorded February 2006. Kicking off with a firm favourite of many peoples is the skanked up, urban / ska crossover of 'Ding Dong' by the Stateside Hombres (formally The Angry Mexican DJs), which blends into Groove Armada's brassy party anthem 'But I Feel Good' (or the 'Butter Song' as it has become known to many). A slice of phat breaks from Atomic Hooligan preceds what is essentially a journey through the various styles of 4/4 house music, starting with my own edit of 'Stylin' in Jakatta', a mash-up between Jakatta's 'The Real Life' (a track featuring samples of "Is this the Real Life, is this just fantasy" from Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody') and Groove Armada's 'Superstylin'. It's a dancefloor stormer and works a treat, although I was unsure about the alternating Queen and Superstylin samples getting too busy and hence I created this edit, dropping the Queen samples and focusing on the Superstyin part of the track. 'Bakiri Ban' by Havana Funk takes a leap into Cuban style percussive house and sets up the summer vibe for 'Agua' by Tempo Rei, which is a beautiful and soulful slice of vocal Latino house. Vocal tracks of this quality, which tread that fine line between tasteful and cheesy are hard to come by, and hence i've been lucky to find a number of such quality vocal tunes which i've weaved throughout this mix. Next up is another rare mash-up, this time from the Queen of pop herself, Kylie! This bootleg was released shortly after the release of the chart single 'Slow', which at the time was an unusual track for Kylie, in that it broke away from the standard pop formula in favour of a more electronica type of sound. So it was a bit of a shock when this anonymous white label turned up featuring a house / trance makeover of 'Slow', in which Kylie's vocals are tastefully utilised and mixed with a thumping 4/4 beat and killer guitar riffs. Needless to say that this tune has been a huge hit on the dancefloor where ever it has been played. 'Bocarriba' by Candyall Beat is a short tribal-house percussion frenzy before an unlikely meeting with RnB artist Missy Elliot, where French electro meister Jacque Lu Cont transforms Elliots 'Lose Control' with his storming electro-house makeover complete with samples from Juan Atkins cybotron electro classic, 'clear'. This blends smoothly into 'Coraçao' from Jerry Ropero & Denis the Menace, who serve up a classic slice of summer drenched Latin-house, before thundering into the addictive tribal-houser 'Niagara', where feel good sweeping chords fuse with wood-on-wood style percussion in this storming DJ Chus Rework. Turkish-house collides head on with Pulp Fiction in Venice Bitch's aptly named hypnotic 'Punky Groove', before two final rounds of vocal Latin-house, first from Afro Medusa's 'Pasilda', a classic tune which was first released back in 2000 and then received this 2005 remix from Haji and Emanuel. This just leaves 'La Esperanza' to close the mix, a perfect outing of summer drenched happy-house fused with Latin vibes and sultry vocals from Ursula Cuesta.
