Robert Miles

Robert Miles, real name Roberto Concina, is an Italian DJ/Producer whose shot to fame with the release of his Euro Dream-House smash 'Children' in 1996. Followed swiftly by 'Fable' and his debut album 'Dreamland', which sold nearly 4 million copies in Europe and went Double Platinum in 4 countries, and platinum in 12 others. Since Dreamland, he has picked up a Brit Award for Best Male Newcomer and a World Music Award. He released a second album, '23AM', in 1998 - a mix of break-beat, slow trance and experimental music. He split with Deconstruction in 1999 and with his management, F&G. He released two singles from '23AM' - 'Freedom' and 'Full Moon' (Italy and Germany only). He founded Hardmonic Music in 2000 and Sharp Records in 2001. His latest album, 'Organik', was released in Summer 2001 and includes extensive work with Mercury Music Award Nominee (2000) Nitin Sawhney.

Single: Children

Children

Track Listing:

  1. Children - Eat Me Edit (4.00)
  2. Children - Dream Version (7.30)
  3. Children - Guitar Mix (7.21)
  4. Children - Message Version (6.50)

Released 1996 on Deconstruction. 'Children' deserved its recent chart success and global airplay in clubland following its discovery by Deconstruction, although this one has been around for a while, featuring on the excellent 1995 Platipus Records compilation Vol.2. It's an uplifting trancey Euro-dream-house track with a simple, but effective piano melody which builds up and explodes.

Single: Fable

Fable

Track Listing:

  1. Fable - Dream Radio (3.50)
  2. Fable - Dream Version (7.00)
  3. Fable - Message Radio (4.00)
  4. Fable - Message Version (7.30)
  5. Fable - Club Version (6.15)
  6. Fable - Wake Up Version (4.30)
  7. Fable - Psycho Version (4.20)

Released 1996 on Deconstruction. Written and produced by Robert Miles. 'Fable' follows close in the heals of 'Children' and is basically a repeat of the successful formula, but not as good. However, the 'Psycho Remix' is semi-decent, being quite a hard housey/trancey track and just saves the single from being binned.

  1. Full Moon - Robert Miles Radio Edit (3.59)

  5. Full Moon - "Double S" Mix (5.55)
  6. Full Moon - DJ Taucher Remix (8.12)

Released 1998 on Motor/DBX Records/Urban Records. This is a German release and has a 7th track which acts as an interactive CD-ROM. There is an Italian release of this CD with othere remixes including another Fluke track (Fluke Instrumental Eclipse), but it's extremely difficult to get ahold of. Thanks to Brian Harris for this information.

Album: Organik

[SALTCD001]
Organik

Track Listing:

  1. Tsbol
  2. Separation
  3. Paths
  4. Wrong
  5. It's all coming back
  6. Pour te parler
  7. Trance shapes
  8. Connections
  9. Release me
  10. Improvisations (parts 1 & 2)

Released 6/01 on Salt Records. Its been over three years since Robert Miles released his last album, '23AM'. 'Organik' sees Miles take on a new direction, ditching the Euro-trance style that gained him popular status in favour of down-tempo experimental global/electronica fusions. With the electronica produced by Miles, live instrumentation is provided from renowned artists including Nitin Sawhney, Trilok Gurtu, Bill Laswell, The London Orchestra and Dhruba Ghosh. On the one hand this is a welcome departure from the all to predictable dance scene, but on the other, I hasten to add, that attempting to listen to this new album from end to end was a painful experience. Avoid if you are expecting commercial dance music, else approach with an open mind and prepare for what appears to be Miles' personal journey of self-discovery. As broad as my musical tastes are, this failed to inspire and had me reaching for the off button.
