Lemon Jelly

Lemon Jelly are Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen. The late 90's saw the release of a limited run of three 10" vinyl EPs, which were later compiled in 2000 as their debut album 'KY'. 2002 saw the release of their second album, 'Lost Horizons'.

    1. In the Bath
    2. Nervious Tension
    3. A Tune for Jack
  • The Yellow EP
    1. His Majesty King Raam
    2. The Staunton Lick
    3. Homage to Patagonia
  • The Midnight EP
    1. Kneel Before Your God

    3. Come

Released 10/2000 on XL Recordings. This debut album from Lemon Jelly is a compilation of their three limited edition 10" vinyl EP's that were released 8/98, 9/99 and 7/2000, respectively. I first encountered Lemon Jelly on the Sunday Best compilation, where 'A Tune for Jack' stood out and grabbed me by the short and curlies. Since then its become a regular track during my chillout sessions and warm-up gigs, more often than not turning heads and raising eyebrows with its sea elephant samples and what should be Johnny Morris narrating (although it isn't). It has to be said that this is a fantastic excursion of downbeat, citrus flavoured, wobble inducing chillout. Highlights include 'A Tune for Jack' and 'Page one' which explodes into life midway through the track. An essential purchase.

Album: Lost Horizons

Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons

Track Listing:

  1. Elements
  2. Space Walk
  3. Ramblin' Man
  4. Return to Patagonia
  5. Nice Weather for Ducks
  6. Experiment Number Six
  7. Closer
  8. The Curse of Ka'Zar

Released 10/2002 on Impotent Fury / XL Recordings. It's exactly two years on from the release of 'KY' and Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen are back with 'Lost Horizons', their second outing of vintage chillage. And what a breath of fresh air this album is; wipe the table clear of all the current chillout clutter and make some room for something that's somewhat cheeky and irresistably charming. Enough said.

10": Space Walk

Lemon Jelly - Space Walk

Track Listing:

  1. Space Walk
  2. Pushy

Released 10/2002 on Impotent Fury / XL Recordings. To accompany the release of their second album, 'Lost Horizons', Lemon Jelly have released this single of 'Space Walk', which is one of the strongest tracks from the album and features here as the same version. The bonus is 'Pushy', a new track that doesn't feature on the album, which follows the same laid back, slightly eccentric (in that 'oh so English country gentleman' kind of way) style as 'Space Walk'. It's a lovely acoustic guitar led number based around some very odd spoken vocals of a child confessing to not liking people and getting on much better with animals. Simply wonderful.

CDS: Space Walk

Lemon Jelly - Space Walk

Track Listing:

  1. Space Walk
  2. Pushy - Radio Edit
  3. Return To Patagonia

Released 10/2002 on Impotent Fury / XL Recordings. See above for review. The CD single is unique in that it's a minidisc embedded in the center of a CD-size clear plastic disc. This allows you to see through the holes in the sleeve as if there's nothing inside, tho it plays perfectly in any CD player. The disc information is on a sticker attached to the plastic wrap with a note: "Please Remove This Sticker!" The sleeve and CD have no identifiable marking besides their colours. Thanks to Brian Harris for this information.

CDS: Nice Weather For Ducks

[IFXLS 156CD]
Lemon Jelly - Nice Weather For Ducks

Track Listing:

  1. Nice Weather For Ducks - Radio Edit
  2. Soft
  3. Space Walk CD-ROM video

Released 12/2002 on Impotent Fury / XL Recordings. Like the Spacewalk CDS, once the plastic is removed, neither the CD or the beautiful sleeve have anything denoting their origins. The title tune is one of the many highlights of the album 'Lost Horizons', although its one of those tunes that you'll either love or hate. For me personally, I absolutely love it. With the slightly eccentric lyrics of "all the ducks are swimming in the water, tra la lah la la lah...", which apparently comes from a European nursery rhyme (I forget the exact country of origin), this tune is incredibly catchy and like many LJ tunes, results in the listener wearing a daft smile. Don't miss the video to this either (available on the DVD single of Nice Weather For Ducks - its a masterpiece!).
