Dario G

Dario G are actually three young men from the north of England and Wales. Paul Spencer and Scott Rosser, who met at college in Salford eight years ago, joined up with Stephen Spencer 18 months ago. The '97 hit single Sunchyme sold over two million copies in Europe alone and the follow up single Carnaval De Paris became a '98 World Cup theme tune. To add to their success the trio released their debut album Sunmachine and the follow up single of the same name in the summer of '98. Their second album, titled 'In Full Colour', was set to hit the shelves early in 2001 but never appeared.

CD Single / 12": Sunchyme

[WEA 103T / WEA 130CD]
Sunchyme

Track Listing:

CD:
  1. Sunchyme - Original (8.28)
  2. Chyme (3.58)
12":
  1. Sunchyme - Original (8.28)
  2. Sunchyme - Remapped by Coloured Oxygen (12.28)

Released 9/97 on Warner Records. This is a superb track, full of uplifting summer feel good vibes. Chorus's of harmonious chants drift over a bouncy carnival steel drum beat, which is proving to be as addictive as early Deep Forest or Enigma (note the use of the sample from Dream Academy's Life in a Northern Town). Coloured Oxygen increase the pace and do away with the summer vibes and convert this into a harder trancey mix which will probably work well on the dance floor. Annoyingly, this isn't present on the CD single and is only available on the 12", and likewise, the short track Chyme, which is really just an edit of the main track, doesn't feature on the 12". The oringal promo vinyl featured the original mix and the long, ambient 'End of the Beginning' which also features on the debut album Sunmachine.
A further 12" promo [SAM 3180] has appeared (2/98) with a Sash Extended remix (5:38) on the A side and the Coloured Oxygen remix on the B-side. Sash, who is usually associated with cheese on the dance floor, provides an adequate dance remix, although at just only 5 minutes long I'm not sure about the extended bit.

Track Listing:

  1. Radio Edit (3:54)
  2. Original Mix (8:27)

  5. Remapped by Coloured Oxygen (12:28)
  6. Sash Extended Mix (5:40)
  7. Chyme (3:39)

Released 1997 on Kinetic/Reprise. Plenty of tracks on this single, some of which are incredibly long! But an all-around pleasant listen (if you can take almost 50 minutes of the same song in one sitting... Thanks to Brian Harris for this information.

Single: Carnival De Paris

[PARI5 / WEA 162T / WEA 162CD]
Carnaval De Paris

Track Listing:

  1. Carnaval De Paris - SRS Remix
  2. Carnaval De Paris - JDS Remix
  3. Carnaval De Paris - Taul Paul Remix

This is a promo release (4/98) of what became the second single from Dario - G (officially released on Warner Records 8/98). It keeps with the carnival theme set by Sunchyme, although the tune isn't as catchy and I doubt that it will be as big a hit as its predecessor, although its being touted as a '98 World Cup theme. Further remixes were released for the 2002 World Cup.

  8. Revolution (9.16)
  9. Voices - Acoustic Version (3.27)
  10. End of the Beginning

Released in July '98, the long awaited debut album from Dario G is here, and thankfully has had a name change from the originally titled "Superdario land". Kicking off with the hugely successful Sunchyme and the slightly disappointing '98 World Cup theme Carnaval De Paris, the album was looking dangerously close in attempting to cash-in on the previous two singles. However, finger posed above the fast forward button, I was pleasantly surprised with what followed. The title track (the third single), not only features samples from David Bowie's "Memory of a Free Festival", but also Bowie's long time producer, Tony Visconti, playing on Flute. When Bowie heard the track he ended up sending his original masters of the track to Dario. The whole album takes on a theme of world music blended with dance vibes, featuring an assortment of non-traditional instruments such as Latin percussion, Bolivian panpipes and Spanish guitars, not to mention the involvement of the London Community Gospel Choir and the choir of Belville Primary School. The inclusion of the ambient version of Sunchyme, titled here as End of the Beginning, wraps the album up in perfect manner. Like the title track, this also features samples of David Bowie's "Memory of a Free Festival". One to get.

CD Single: Voices feat. Vanessa Quiñones

[WEA256CD1/WEA256CD2]
Voices

Track Listing:

Disc 1:
  1. Voices - Radio Edit (3.22)
  2. Voices - Sash! X-Tended Mix (5.45)
  3. Voices - Kriana Mix (8.13)
Disc 2:
  1. Voices - Film Acoustic Version (3.24)
  2. Voices - Matt Darey's Tekara Mx (6.51)
  3. Voices - Jimp & Wolff Mix (6.51)

Released 3/2000 on Warner Music. Written by Spencer, Rosser & Spencer. Arranged and co-produced by Dario-G. Produced by Peter Oxendale. Taken from the album Sunmachine, as featured in the film 'The Beach'. Dario G dish up one of the more commercial sounding tracks from their debut album, featuring vocals from Vanessa Quiñones. On the first CD Sash! produces a rather predictable mix which is nothing new or ground-breaking, whereas the Kriana Mix (by Marco Giovanni & Stuart B.) cranks up the tempo and minimalises the vocals, producing an amicable trance remix. Matt Darey is adventurous enough to include a splash of trancey drum and bass which results in the most varied and interesting mix of the bunch, whilst Jimp & Wolff starts off on the same foot and then dives straight back into 4/4 trance. An average affair overall.

CD Single: Dream to Me

[FESCD79]
Dream to Me

Track Listing:

  1. Dream to Me - Radio Edit (3.09)
  2. Dream to Me - Airscape Remix (8.38)
  3. Dream to Me - Warrior Mix (7.48)
  4. Video (CDROM)

Released 2/01 on Manifesto. Licensed from Mercury Records Ltd. Written by Spencer, Rosser, O'Riodan and Hogan. Produced by Paul Spencer and Scott Rosser. Track 1 mixed by Goetz, track2 by Sven Maes and Johan Gielen, and track 3 by Michael Woods. Taken from the forthcoming album 'In Full Colour'. Covering an old Cranberries track, Dario-G release their first track from their forthcoming second album and what must be considered as their most commercial sounding track to date with vocals by Dolores O'Riordan. The Airscape mix is the better of the three, and is sure to be a big hit in commercial club land as well as faring well in the charts.
