Cosmic Baby
Ambient sound sculptor Harald Bluechel whose methodology reflects his erudite philosophy on music - 'Trance isn't purely mind music. It's body and soul music and therefore cannot be represented simply by sounds of the sea and mystical flutes. My own music is far too complex to be reduced to a label like trance. My music has nothing to do with creating a functional dance or ambient track.'. His music conversely, has led to him being widely regarded as 'The Star Of Trance', or worse, 'The Modular Mozart' or 'Sir Trancealot'. He had actually been perfecting his technique since the late 80s, and even resisted approaches to sign him from Rhythm King in 1990. Claiming to have been making music since the age of four, Cosmic Baby is actually a trained musician, who studied at the Nuremberg Conservatory at the age of seven. As well as classical music (notably Erik Satie) he was also heavily influenced by his native forebears such as Kraftwerk, or Tangerine Dream. He has recorded widely in his own country since 1991, under the name Energy 52 (with DJ Kid Paul aka Paul M aka Paul Schmitz Moormann) and Futurhythm monikers. Eventually he signed with the Berlin-based MFS label in 1992. He first graced the British club scene, and charts, with a collaboration with Paul Van Dyk, under the name Visions Of Shiva, scoring with 'Perfect Day'. An appearance at the Eissenporthall in Cologne brought him many plaudits as a live entertainer, as did another PA at Club UK in London. On record he became widely noted for his 'Loops Of Infinity' cut, which prefaced a stylistically varied second album. Alongside the conventional trance of 'Cosmic Greets Florida' lay such splendours as a re-writing of Debussy's 'L'apres-Midi D'une Faune'. Albums include the 1992 'Stellar Supreme' (MFS) and the 1994 'Thinking About Myself' (Arista/Logic). Edited from the Encyclopaedia of Popular Music Copyright Muze UK Ltd. 1989 - 1998

Album: Thinking About Myself[LOC LP 10]
Released 1994 on MFS. Quite a dark moody album, although its worth getting for the superb 'Fantasia'.
| ||
Single: Loops of Infinity[LOC122]
Released 1994 on Logic Records. A classic track - best mix by Jam and Spoon with the Tripomatic Fairytales Remix.
| ||
12": Fantasia[79591-59003-1]
Released 1994 on Logic Records. 'Fantasia' has got to be the best track on the album Thinking About Myself - its a shame the original mix is not included on the 12". Celestial Harmonies and Remix II are both superb remixes, keeping true to the original mix from the album. On the other hand, Talking Drums is a minimalistic mixture of beats, percussion and acid tweaks, sounding nothing like the original.

CDS: Fantasia[LOC 144]

radio edit. Thanks to Brian Harris for this information.

12": Heaven's Tears[MFS 7041-0]
Released 1993 on MFS. Written by Cosmic Baby and produced by Cosmic Baby and Jens Wojnar. Original version available on the Cosmic Baby album 'Stella Supreme'. Classic trance.
| ||

Released 1992 on MFS.
| ||
12": Cosmikk Trigger[ESP 9115]
Released 1992 on ESP Records in association with Go Bang Records.
| ||
Single: A Tribute to Blade Runner[4509-98572-2]
Released 1994 on East-West. Originally composed by Vangelis for the cult film Blade Runner. Cosmic Baby provides a superb dance version of the theme tune - I'm pretty sure though that the best mix is Dance Title 2 which features on the second CD single.
