Album: Continuo - Meditations on Pachelbel's Canon[657036 3003-2] | |||
Released 9/99 on Climate/Six Degrees Records (USA). Written by Victor E. Friedberg. Produced by Garry Hughes. 'Meditations on Pachelbel's Canon' is a stylish re-working of the classical piece 'Canon in D Major' by German composer Johann Pachelbel. The production is of exceptional taste, such that the boundaries between classical music and electronica are gently errased. The 'Intro' is a loyal rendition of the classical original, whilst the five 'Meditation' pieces are varied down-tempo explorations of electronica, combining gentle breaks with the melody of the classical piece drifting in and out at free will to a backdrop of calming ethnic style vocal samples and the operatic vocals of the original. The 'Finale' is a glorious climax to the album, led by a warming piano solo and backed by ethnic vocals. As with all concept albums, reactions will be mixed and opinions varied, although its hard to believe that this album could offend even the most loyal of classical music lovers.
