Ashley Slater
Singer and trombonist Ashley Slater first made his mark on the music scene in the funk influenced Microgroove. He came to wider attention as the frontman with Norman Cook's outfit FreakPower, as the memorable voice behind 'Tune In Turn On Cop Out' in 1995. His latest project is the loungecore-influenced "Big Lounge". Edited from the BBC web site

12": The Man feat. Ashley Slater - Question[AFR009]
Released 2001 on Afro Art Records. All tracks written and produced by Marc Woolford & Paul Murphy. Words by Marc Woolford. This is an fantastic tune, with the Mambo del Norte Version being the more upbeat version and the Phillysophicalsoul Version down-tempo. Ashley Slater, who has a great voice, expresses his philosophies about life, resulting in an non-debatable conclussion - "just shut the f**k up and dance!".

12": Ashley Slater - Private Sunshine[AFR019]
Release date: 6/5/02 on Afro Art Records. All tracks written and produced by Ashley Slater and Paul Murphy. Additional remix and production on tracks 1 & 2 by Paul Murphey. Original version of Private Sunshine features on Ashley Slater's 'Big Lounge'. Many thanks to Paul Murphy for this promo release. The title track is one for lazy Sunday afternoons and summer days down by the river - it's a gorgeous down-tempo groove featuring the warm & friendly vocals of Ashley Slater. In contrast, 'Private Dubshine' picks up the pace with a gentle Arabesque percussion groove clattering under the melody of the original score and, as the title suggests, dubs the vocals. Essential.

Promo CD: Big Lounge - After Hours[PP7]
Released 2002 on Plush. This is a double CD DJ only promotion featuring a montage of remixes by various DJs and producers. The pilled CD is a collection of more upbeat house jams, whilst the Chilled CD features a range of down tempo grooves along with a few of Ashley Slaters acappella's. Depending on DJ reactions, the best of these remixes will feature on vinyl’s and a commercial CD release at a future date. These CDs feature a wealth of fantastic remixes, covering jazzy house through to Ska and drum and bass. Personal favourites are the various remixes of 'Strange Dreams', with the Chris Tucker remix, the Friendly Backdoor Boogie mix and Universal Constructors Ska remix all hitting the mark. I'll also definitly be playing out Chris Coco's mix of 'Got the Feeling', along with Zak Frosts reworking of 'Husband'. Many thanks to Steve Argüelles for this CD.

12": Bitboutique vs Ashley Slater - Merry Xmas / Husband[BBTQOO2]
Released 1/03 on Bitboutique Records (Zurich Switzerland). Track 1 written by Ashely Slater. Track 2 written by Ashely Slater and Norman Cook. Additional remix and production by Cycle Repair (Tschudi / Guettinger / Gmuer). Taken from the forthcoming remix double album Ashley Slater's 'Big Lounge : After Hours Pilled and Chilled'. Original versions taken from Ashley Slater's 'Big Lounge'. Neither of these remixes featured on the above promo CD of 'Big Lounge : After Hours', so its interesting to hear that there are other remixes being produced from the 'Big Lounge' album. Cycle Repairs version of 'Husband' is very 80's, with elements that I associate with bands such as New Order, whilst on the other hand their take on 'Merry Xmas' is a slowish deep house groover. Many thanks to Steve Argüelles for this vinyl.
